A man has died after attempting to cross a highway in Melbourne's outer-east on Friday night.

The man in his 50s was crossing the Maroondah Highway in Ringwood, near Oban Road about 10.20pm when he was hit by a west-bound car.
Police say he died at the scene.
The car's driver, also believed to be aged in his 50s, was assisting police with the investigation into the crash.
